Fighter explores the spectrum of emotion that we all experience in conjunction with terminal illness; sadness, desperation, anger, fear, grief, and ultimately love. This song was written for trumpet player Carrie McCune's aunt and her struggle against cancer. It is about having no choice but to fight, about how challenging it is to face the fear of death in the eyes of loved ones, and about the brokenness of our healthcare systems. This song is meant to evoke that profound feeling of eternal ebb and flow, the acknowledgement that once we experience the joy of life, suddenly there is something worth fighting for, something to be protected, something to be missed.
lyrics
She can’t let go of the growth on her heart
She can’t let go of her daughters darting eyes
It’s fine she said, I love you
So fine, but I need you still
She can’t let go of the growth on her heart
She can only fight it
She can only fight it
She can only fight it now
She can’t let go of the growth on her heart
It’s taken more than its fair part
Who knows when this started
Who knows when the end will come
Once there is life there is danger
Once there is joy there is anger
The pain grows greater and greater
She fights for her life where’s her savior
They say that it’s not a fight
But surely we all lose
They say that it’s all alright
Except when it’s your time to choose
They wouldn’t say that it’s all their fault
They can’t afford to lose
They wouldn’t say that it’s all their fault
They’re afraid, they spoke, too soon
Once there is life there is danger
Once there is joy there is anger
She pays for her days like a stranger
She fights for her life
Once there is life there is danger
Once there is joy there is anger
She pays for her days like a stranger
She fights for her life
She fights for her life
